🍁 Let’s Go on a Leaf Hunt!

There’s something magical about fall—crunchy leaves underfoot, crisp air, and nature’s palette of gold, red, and orange. At Snicker-Doodles Pre-K Market, we love tapping into this seasonal wonder with one of our favorite traditions: a leaf hunt preschool activity!

Inspired by the book We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger, this simple walk in nature turns into a powerful learning experience.

This year, we’re heading to Middlefork Forest Preserve for our big fall outing—and we’re inviting you to join the fun (virtually or in your own backyard)!

🌿 Why Leaf Hunts Matter in Early Childhood

Outdoor adventures like leaf hunts are more than just fun—they’re packed with developmental benefits for preschoolers.

Here’s what your little learners are gaining:

đŸ’Ș Gross Motor Growth

  • Climbing hills, jumping over logs, and walking trails help build strength and coordination.

  • Movement through varied terrain supports balance and spatial awareness.

👃 Sensory Exploration

  • Children engage all their senses—touching rough bark, smelling earthy leaves, hearing birds and crunches underfoot.

  • Sensory input promotes brain development and calms dysregulated nervous systems.

🔍 Science & Nature Skills

  • Identifying different leaf shapes introduces early classification and observation skills.

  • Children begin to understand change, seasons, and plant life cycles.

🧠 Language and Cognitive Development

  • Narrating what they find encourages vocabulary growth: “crunchy,” “pointy,” “maple,” “yellow.”

  • Sorting, comparing, and questioning build cognitive flexibility and scientific thinking.

🍂 Solving Fall Classroom Challenges with a Leaf Hunt Preschool Activity

Fall is such a magical season, but if we’re honest—it can also be overwhelming for teachers.

🍁 Between teaching routines, managing behavior expectations, and juggling holiday events, it’s hard to find time for activities that are both engaging and educational.

That’s exactly why a leaf hunt preschool activity works so well. It takes the learning outdoors, builds in movement (perfect for wiggly bodies!), and still checks the boxes for literacy, math, and science goals. Best of all, it doesn’t require hours of prep—just a short walk outside and a few simple tools.

If you’re feeling crunched for time this fall, let this be a reminder: you don’t have to choose between seasonal fun and meaningful skill-building. Activities like this leaf hunt combine both, and your students will remember the experience long after the season ends.

📚 Extend the Learning

After the hunt, keep the learning going with:

  • Leaf rubbings with crayons and paper

  • Sorting leaves by size, shape, or color

  • Story retelling of We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt with real leaves as props

  • Art projects like leaf crowns or collages

These experiences reinforce classification, fine motor, and expressive language skills.

🍃 Final Thoughts

Nature is one of our greatest teachers. With a little planning, your fall leaf hunt can become a sensory-rich, skill-building journey your students will never forget.

So grab your leaf bags, put on your boots, and get ready for some leafy learning fun! 🍂
